Are legal tech and eJustice familiar terms to you? Would you like to find out how open data and the legal system can work together? Do you see the digitalisation of the legal sector as a chance and an opportunity for an open and fairer future?
Take part in the Open Legal Lab and develop new digital solutions for the Swiss legal system in interdisciplinary teams within 32 hours!

The Open Legal Lab is a two-day event offering the opportunity to develop new ideas and creative solutions for the Swiss legal system together. All legal scholars, legal tech fans, as well as all interested designers, programmers, data analysts, students and other creative minds with an interest in Swiss law are invited. Our experience shows that such collaborative and interdisciplinary formats (we call them «hackdays») make a valuable contribution to developing new solutions to complex problems.
Let’s build a sustainable and intelligent legal system of the future together.

Why Open Legal Lab?
Digitalisation, which has already fundamentally changed many industries in recent years, is only just beginning in the legal and judicial sector. We want to harness the potential of information technology in these complex environments to create tomorrow’s solutions to today’s problems!
The Swiss legal system and public administration generate large amounts of data that are still little used or not used at all. Making better use of data for projects and new services is in the interest of these organisations, but above all in the interest of citizens and society.
How can I take part?
The Open Legal Lab is open to anyone interested. Our aim is to bring together interdisciplinary teams that develop new ideas and solutions together in two days.

The current COVID-19 rules of the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) apply to participation.

The event takes place as part of the Magglingen Legal Informatics Seminar at the Swiss Olympic House in Magglingen. Food and drink will be provided. Hotel rooms will be made available for the overnight stay.
The results of the Open Legal Lab will be presented on Monday, 28 March 2022, from 3 pm at the Magglingen Legal Informatics Seminar in the auditorium of the Swiss Federal Institute of Sport Magglingen.

How much does it cost to take part in the Open Legal Lab?
Thanks to our sponsors and partners, the Open Legal Lab is free of charge.
Food (including breakfast), electricity, basic workspace infrastructure and internet are also provided.
Do I need a project idea or a team to take part?
No, you can come with an idea or a team, but it is not necessary. At the start of the hackdays, various project ideas and challenges are presented. You can work on the project idea that inspires you most.
Is the Open Legal Lab only meant for developers?
No, the hackdays are aimed not only at developers, but also at designers, lawyers, journalists, lateral thinkers & makers. Please register here.
Do I have to stay on site for 32 hours?
Experience shows that the successful teams are those that work together on site on implementing an idea for the whole time.
What is the official language?
The languages at the Open Legal Lab are German and French. Within the teams, you are of course free to decide which language you communicate in.
What do I need to bring?
Most importantly: don’t forget your laptop. You might also want to bring your notebook, pens, etc. We will, however, provide you with basic materials such as paper, flipcharts, Post-its, food and drinks.
What happens afterwards?
One thing is clear: the rights to the source code created during the Open Legal Lab remain with the teams.
With the Open Legal Lab projects, we want to achieve a long-term and lasting impact. Accordingly, the partner organisations are happy to continue supporting and promoting promising projects and results as best they can.
