12 October 2021, 13:00–18:30 @ Online

Organised by Opendata.ch, Open Government Data Office

The 11th Opendata.ch Forum took place on 12 October 2021 – after several switches between online, on-site and hybrid, in the end fully online. Under the theme «Shedding Light on the Invisible (Data)», eight speakers from five countries addressed over 80 participants, hosted by Nikki Böhler, in three blocks: Open Government Data, Mapping & Crisis Mapping, and Data in Science and Health.

André Streilein told how swisstopo opened its data in March 2021, Tori Boeck showed how prototypes built on open data bring value to the Berlin administration, and Andrew Young of The GovLab spoke about the third wave of open data and data stewardship. Doug Specht warned against making humans machine-readable and the illusion of completeness; Monika Halkort talked with Darienne Hunziker about how data from the Mediterranean fails people on the move.

In the last block Marcel Salathé presented participatory data collection without compromising privacy, Aidan Peppin questioned the boundaries of health data, and Simone Pengue showed his documentary «Forgotten Data: the Leftovers of Science». All talks were recorded and are on YouTube.

The Open Data Student Award 2021 was not presented at the Forum but at DINAcon on 23 October 2021 – the first time there and the fourth time overall. The jury of Maud Chatelet, André Golliez, Jannis Valaulta and Stefan Keller nominated three works: «Ask Open Data» by Philippe Voinov and Marc Bitterli, «Fit for 55» by Andrea Röösli, Andreas Eisenring and Patrick Flückiger on charging spaces in the city of Zurich – and the winner: the bachelor thesis «Estimating the completeness of OpenStreetMap POI data with machine learning methods» by Marco Crisafulli and Dominic Monzón (OST, Campus Rapperswil). The prize was CHF 1000.

Shedding Light on the Invisible (Data)

The Opendata.ch/2021 Forum took place online on the afternoon of 12 October 2021 – a conference where experts and the curious learn about and exchange the latest findings around open data. Under the theme Shedding Light on the Invisible (Data) it looked at the art and science of opening data, at hidden data and the space in between: climate, health, gender and conflict.

Because of the pandemic the forum moved to a shorter online edition; participation was free. The Open Data Student Award 2021 was presented at DINAcon.
