MAKE Open Tourism Data Hackdays
- Hackathon

27–28 October 2017, 11:09 @ Sport- und Kongresszentrum Arosa, Poststrasse 27, 7050 Arosa
On 27 and 28 October 2017 some sixty developers, designers, tourism professionals and interested people met at the Sports and Congress Centre in Arosa to develop ideas for the tourist office and the destination of the future. The MAKE Open Tourism Data Hackdays were part of the Innotour project «Tourist Office 3.0» of the IG Tourist Office 3.0; Opendata.ch ran them with Arosa Tourism as host and the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts. After the welcome by André Golliez and tourism director Pascal Jenny, Andreas Liebrich presented Arosa’s data, Oleg Lavrovsky the open tourism data and Kerem Zafer Adigüzel the transport data of SBB; ten challenges were waiting on hack.opendata.ch.
The teams worked late into the night, in the end in the lobby of Hotel Sunstar. On Saturday Hans Schmid presented the planned Bärenland Arosa, Patrick Stählin introduced OpenStreetMap and took participants outside to map, and Jana Koehler talked about artificial intelligence in tourism and the «Rigi robot».
Seven teams presented on Saturday afternoon: a web map on which the reception desk marks its tips for the guest, a tool for the OSMyBiz notes in OpenStreetMap, the digital counter MyArosa with a chatbot, a forecasting dashboard for mountain railways and ski school from weather, holiday and Swisscom data, beacons for a «Smart Arosa», a LoRaWAN button as satisfaction tracker and a prototype of the Digital Tourist Office. Coaches came from Opendata.ch, the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences, gutundgut, Arosa Tourism, HSR, Die Ergonomen and Netcetera.

Challenges
- Location Tips from the Reception Desk
Auf den Gast zugeschnittene Infos zu Locations diskret an der Rezeption als gedruckte Karte oder auf seinem Mobile.
→ Result: Reception Desk as Tourist Office
Challenge description
- The "no tourist" office
The tourist office for people who wouldn't consider themselves as "tourist"
Challenge description
Today, millennials and generation Y people want to experience unique adventures, discover hidden gems and get exclusive access to local hotspots.
And the tourist office - per definition - isn't perceived as a place where you get that advice: It's perceived as a place where only tourists go and where you get tourist information about tourist attractions. How can we close that gap and create the tourist office for "no tourists"?
- OSMyBiz Notes – IFS Institut für Software (HSR)
OpenStreetMap My Business Notes Management Tool
→ Result: OSMyBiz Notes

- SBB Data Challenges – Schweizerische Bundesbahnen SBB

CHALLENGE 1
Combine different transportation means, in order to make it possible to reach destinations, which are otherwise unreachable by the SBB. You can write a web application or a mobile app. You could use the following alongside the SBB time table:

Boat or ferry lines
Gondola
Concessionary lines (e.g. a shuttlebus)CHALLENGE 2
Write an app or a web application, which helps you in planning an event and takes the following into consideration:
Connectivity
Weather forecast: Weather Data (there's a free plan provided by IBM)
Example: You want to inline skate with your friends, but want to make sure, that you pick a date where you have a sunny weather. - Swisscom Data Challenge – Swisscom AG

UPDATE: The Digital Tourist Office project was developed in response to this challenge.
---
The project that started this hackday is called "Tourist Office 3.0". The focus of the hackday is now wider on purpose, yet let's not forget the initial goal.
Some questions I have in my head:- what services should a future tourist office offer on site, what in an app, on the web or otherwise?
- how and in what direction are expectations of tourists likely to change?
- what data that we have in the hackday contributions can help us to answer the topic?

- Meetup for Tourism – gutundgut
Online platform where tourists can meet and plan their activities together
Challenge description
Be it a hike in Arosa, a skiing adventure in Valais or a culinary trip to Ticino - imagine a platform where tourists can meet up, form a group and then commonly plan their Swiss adventure (even co-organise child-care and so on).
- Adventure finder – Die Ergonomen
Imagine it's a Sunday afternoon, you're on holidays in Switzerland and you don't know what to do!
Challenge description
The adventure finder could operate in many ways
- A device with a buzzer: Hit the buzzer and get inspired by the activity/tour/destination it's showing you.
- Make a selfie and then you can see yourself on the monitor, doing different kind of activities (such as hiking, biking, swimming) and choose which one suits you most :-)
- Put on virtual reality glasses and explore all possible adventures of your destination
-------
Variation of this idea:
An App called "SURPRISE ME"
Imagine you could choose- a subject (such as design, food, art, fashion, nature)
- a time-frame (1 hour, 2 hours, 3 hours, half day, 1 day)
- season (spring, summer, autumn, winter)
- current weather (rainy, sunny)
-> Then you'll get 3 suggestions tailored to your preferences and current situation
- My best moment
→ Result: Destination Forecast Dashboard
Challenge description
If I want to go for a swim in Zurich, Google tells me whether I have to expect a crowded or half-empty public swimming pool.
Imagine you could do the same for your Swiss holiday destination and have a forecasting tool which destination has how many people visiting at which time - and whether it's very busy or you can enjoy your favourite spots for yourself. Or whether the ski slope is overcrowded or if there's enough space to waltz down the entire piste.
This tool could not only be interesting for tourists, but also for destinations: How many people can we expect in week X in Arosa, due to holiday season in different Swiss Cantons, the usual catchment area and so on.

Adventure, travel, holidays, vacations – words that make our hearts beat faster. That is why we are especially pleased to announce the MAKE Open Tourism Data Hackdays 2017.
As is well known, our association pursues 3 overarching goals: transparency, innovation and efficiency. While we devoted the Election Hackdays in 2015 to transparency and the Energy Hackdays in 2016 to efficiency, this autumn is all about innovation – more precisely, innovation in tourism.
2017 results at a glance

On 27 and 28 October 2017 we look forward to welcoming you – developers, designers, tourism enthusiasts and anyone interested – at the Sport- und Kongresszentrum in Arosa, where we will all develop innovative ideas together for the tourist office and the tourist destination of the future.

Presenting ideas & data
Right at the start of the event, datasets and ideas can be presented. Even before the event, we are collecting your project ideas here and interesting datasets here.
Mapathon
On Saturday you have the unique opportunity to work with Open Street Map experts to extend the maps of Arosa and record all the information that is of interest to tourists - for example viewpoints, benches for a rest, public fireplaces or toilets. The whole thing takes place outdoors and there are (almost) no limits to your imagination 😉
The Tourism Hackdays take place at the “Sport- und Kongresszentrum” in 7050 Arosa. Here are directions from Arosa railway station to the venue:

If you are coming by car, you will find more information on parking here.
And in the following photos you can see the venue:

We will be staying at the Hotel Sunstar in Arosa, Seewaldweg, 7050 Arosa. The hotel is about a 15-minute walk from the venue. Single, double, triple and quadruple rooms with private bathroom are available. You can check in as early as Friday afternoon. Just give your name at reception and you will receive your key.
