23–24 May 2014 @ Basel, Sierre und Mailand

Organised by Opendata.ch, University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland Valais

At the first International Sports Hackdays in Basel, Sierre and Milan, over 120 developers and designers, journalists and scientists, professionals and amateurs came together to prototype new approaches to making creative use of sports data. They built new types of hardware, new interfaces for fitness equipment and spectator apps, analysed Tour de France performances and FC Basel's tactics, sport education policies and infrastructures.

Experts on athletic data from companies such as Deltatre and Technogym and from Switzerland's National Sports Centre in Magglingen worked alongside data visualisation experts from Tuxtax and Interactive Things, academics, hackers and makers. Twelve projects came out of the two days – among them SecondLamp, BlitzPoll and Spörtle in Basel, OptiSports, Beat It and Sportee in Sierre, and a Tour des Géants analysis in Milan. The data used is on datahub.io.

The message to sport's governing bodies: while open government data has become an established force, sports data still sit in the closed coffers of functionaries – “Mr. Blatter, tear down this wall, make FIFA's data available to all!”

Sport is fun, sport is healthy, sport is a business – and sport is also data. Results and times, athletes’ performance curves, passes played from A to B in real time, your bike tours: there is more and more data on more and more sports!

That’s why it’s time to kick off the first International Sports Hackdays: two days of data wrestling, visualising games and working on apps that thrill fans and athletes, learning from one another, getting better and having fun.

Venues: Basel (hosted by i-net and Webilea), Sierre (HES-SO Valais-Wallis at the Techno-Pôle) and Milan (Tuxtax). To close on Saturday evening: the UEFA Champions League final on the big screen.

PS: A special invitation to all Zurich folk who would never travel to Basel: “Whoever doesn’t hack in Basel is no true Zuricher!”, says the born-and-bred Zuricher with an Eastern Swiss accent.
