Open Data Date 2014

On the eve of the international Open Data Day 2014, on 21 February, more than 50 active members of the Swiss open data community, government representatives and interested people met at Tamedia for an exchange of ideas organised by Opendata.ch and Hacks/Hackers.

A lot happened around open government data in Switzerland in 2013. Time to ask the Confederation, cantons, cities, the community and the media: where do we stand, how and where do we go from here?

Before those present launched into a lively discussion, David Bauer on behalf of Swiss data journalists, Michael Grüebler for the City of Zurich, Peppino Giarritta for the Canton of Zurich, Jean-Luc Cochard for the Confederation, André Golliez for the Opendata.ch association and Andreas Amsler on behalf of open data users each presented their view on these questions.

Inspired by the controversial discussion, which revolved largely around the question of what makes open data a success – only concrete apps, or already the data as the basis for potential apps – Hannes Gassert and Andreas Amsler wrote an article for Netzwoche on the “state of the nation” regarding open data:
