Pioneering Innovation in the Energy Sector

Fundamental changes are on the horizon in the energy sector. The industry is being reshaped by what experts call the 3 D’s: Decarbonisation, Digitalisation, and Decentralisation. As we transition towards a more sustainable future, digital tools and collaboration are becoming indispensable in optimizing and stabilizing the interplay between energy supply, consumption, and storage.

In this spirit, the Energy Data Hackdays 2024 united 130 energy enthusiasts including energy experts, analysts, data scientists, programmers and students. Together, they fostered a collaborative environment from September 12 to 13 fueled by teamwork and enthusiasm, tackling real-world challenges head-on. 

The participants tackled various challenges including the prediction of PV installation angles or determining the signature of a solar system. The project “When do Balance Energy Prices Skyrocket?” focused on analyzing and modeling national energy balancing in Switzerland using open datasets to better understand the factors influencing balance energy prices and develop predictive tools. During the Energy Data Hackdays, participants developed a total of 12 unique projects. Find out more details about all the challenges here or below. 

Participants not only showcased their technical skills but also demonstrated the power of collaboration across disciplines. By bringing together diverse perspectives—from energy policy to software development—teams were able to approach problems from multiple angles, fostering innovative thinking. This collaborative spirit not only enriched the quality of the projects but also built a sense of community among participants, inspiring future partnerships and initiatives in the energy sector.
