Smart City Hackathon – Wetzikon
- Hackathon

24–25 June 2022, 09:00 @ Kronensaal, Restaurant Krone, Bahnhofstrasse 163, 8620 Wetzikon
Organised by Opendata.ch, Stadt Wetzikon
The first Smart City Hackathon took place on 24 and 25 June 2022 at the Kronensaal in Wetzikon – an initiative of the IG Smart City Wetzikon and the City of Wetzikon as part of its smart city strategy, run with Opendata.ch and backed by 26 partners and sponsors from the region. Around 75 people had registered: staff of the administration and the municipal utilities, local businesses, experts from industry and universities, students and developers.
Eleven of 16 challenges were taken up by teams. The results include a mockup for smart booking of the city’s rooms, the WetziJob website for the youth work’s pocket-money job exchange, the DeCarb Wetzikon dashboard on the energy use of buildings, concepts for EV charging stations, regional space management and a sports and culture calendar, a reward scheme for GrüeziWetzike, the outline «Responsible guest» and a working prototype of a subscribable waste collection calendar. The largest team merged three challenges into WetziTrail, a platform for themed and game trails through Wetzikon that is online today at wetzitrail.ch.
On Saturday afternoon the teams presented their results; WetzikonTV streamed the opening and the final presentations and recorded every presentation in a video of its own. The City of Wetzikon published the results on smart-city-wetzikon.ch, and a second edition followed in 2023.

The first Smart City Hackathon takes place on 24 & 25 June 2022 in Wetzikon!
The challenges of our time do not stop at the gates of our cities. Do you want to help shape the city of the future? Take part in the Smart City Hackathon and develop new digital solutions for the town of Wetzikon in interdisciplinary teams within 32 hours!
Where: Kronensaal, Wetzikon
When: 24 & 25 June 2022
Let’s build a sustainable and smart city of the future together!
The smart city is a comprehensive concept and understanding of how cities can develop further in a way that conserves resources and makes them more liveable. The political development of the town of Wetzikon into a «smart city» was initiated by a postulate of the FDP & the town council was invited to draw up a smart city strategy. In 2021, parliament referred the postulate for further action. With town council resolution 269, the town council confirmed its intention to develop a smart city strategy and to launch further projects within the town administration or to support them together with other stakeholders. The Smart City Hackathon is one of these projects.
Why a Smart City Hackathon?
Digitalisation, which has already fundamentally transformed many industries in recent years, is only just beginning in cities. We want to harness the potential of optimising workflows and processes in these complex environments to create the city of the future!
Companies, institutions and public infrastructure generate large amounts of data that are used only partially or not at all. Making better use of unused data for projects and new services is in the interest of these organisations, but above all in the interest of citizens and society. As part of the Smart City Hackathon, data will be made available in the context of the town of Wetzikon for the development of creative ideas and first prototypes.
“Collaboration and open data are the basic prerequisites for implementing the Energy Strategy 2050” – Martin Hertach, Swiss Federal Office of Energy.
How can I take part?
The Smart City Hackathon is open to anyone who is interested. Our goal is to bring together interdisciplinary teams who develop new ideas and solutions within two days.
The information, links and interfaces you need to take part actively will be sent to you by e-mail after registration (Please also check your spam folder… *).
Shortly before the event, the links to the event stream may also be made available here on the website.
