Testing Civic Tech
- Prototype Fund

9 November 2021, 18:00–20:00 @ Smart City Lab Zürich, Hohlstrasse 400, 8048 Zürich
Organised by Opendata.ch, Stadtentwicklung Zürich
On 9 November 2021, the Smart City team of the City of Zurich and the Prototype Fund invited people to the Smart City Lab on Hohlstrasse. The workshop was part of the «Debatte» series of Karl der Grosse; Opendata.ch helped prepare it on behalf of Zurich’s urban development office, moderated it and followed it up. After an introduction, participants tested one tool per group: pol.is on how shared micromobility in Zurich should be regulated, a Decidim test environment of the city with ideas on transport, and VelObserver, which lets cyclists rate Zurich’s cycling infrastructure. Everyone then discussed in mixed groups what they liked, what they did not and where such tools could be useful in Zurich.
For VelObserver it was the first test of a working prototype of the web app, with around ten people. The feedback: rating takes effort and cannot be done while riding, people mostly rate when they are annoyed, photos would help, and it has to be visible that a rating changes something. The team took these questions into its retreat; shortly afterwards the City of Zurich approached the project to discuss working together.

Workshop to strengthen political participation in Zurich
6:00 – 8:00 pm, Smart City Lab Zürich, Hohlstrasse 400, 8048 Zürich
Civic technologies (civic tech for short) are digital technologies for improving political participation. The *Smart City Team* of the City of Zurich and the Prototype Fund invite you to try out new forms of political participation and decision-making. In this interactive event, we will test participation tools from all over the world together – and of course from Switzerland too: pol.is, Decidim and VelObserver, a project from the second round of the Prototype Fund.
Join in to learn more about ongoing developments in new ways to participate and to contribute your own ideas for an open city administration – modelled on Taiwan. Please bring a smartphone or a laptop.
