The Open Data Platform Swiss Public Transport is online: Opentransportdata.swiss

Since 2011, the open data community and our board have been campaigning for open transport data in Switzerland, and today the time has finally come: the Open Data Platform Swiss Public Transport is online. The new portal opentransportdata.swiss provides timetable, real-time and actual data as files or via services. The data cover all licensed transport companies in Switzerland. Below you will find the official press release of the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC) and the Federal Office of Transport (FOT):

From 2 December 2016, timetable details and real-time information on public transport in Switzerland are available on a new platform. It was built by SBB on behalf of the Confederation. The data enable both transport companies and businesses outside the transport sector to develop new customer information systems, new apps or other applications for informing travellers.

The Federal Office of Transport (FOT) has commissioned SBB, as system manager, to set up and operate an open data platform for the whole of Swiss public transport. The Open Data Platform Swiss Public Transport provides all timetable data supplied by the participating licensed transport companies, as well as the current and expected traffic situation of public transport in real time. Its users are companies and start-ups that process the data and compile customer information for travellers. In line with the Federal Council’s “Open Data” strategy and as a contribution to implementing DETEC’s “Digital Switzerland” strategy, innovation by the private sector is to be facilitated and promoted.

In a first step, the following data are available: planned timetable information, information on stops, timetable forecasts, actual data or the latest forecasts, and a data basis for departure/arrival boards. The platform is being continuously developed and adapted to needs. The aim is to bring together uniform data from all licensed transport companies on the platform. The platform can relieve the existing systems of pure data retrieval. Retrieving the data is free of charge, with the exception of very large volumes.
